High Court suspends Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi’s sentence in Toshakhana Case
Imran Khan Bushra Bibi Sentence Suspended by High Court
The Islamabad High Court stopped the 14-year prison time for former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, in the Toshakhana case on Monday. The court said they will hear their appeal after Eid holidays.
A court in Islamabad sentenced Khan and Bibi in January. They received another seven years each for marrying when they weren’t supposed to. They married in 2018, a few months before Khan became prime minister.
Before this, Khan and his foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi received ten years in jail for breaking the Official Secrets Act.
In the Toshakhana corruption case, people accused Imran Khan, the 71-year-old former cricketer who turned into a politician, of keeping expensive gifts they received while he was the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
After finding him guilty in the Toshakhana corruption case, the Pakistan Election Commission banned Khan from participating in politics for five years. (Imran Khan Bushra Bibi Sentence Suspended by High Court)
This happened just before the general election in Pakistan.
According to the rules of Toshakhana (which means “treasure house” in Persian), officials can keep gifts by paying for them, but they must first declare them. Khan and his wife didn’t do this and allegedly got expensive things for cheap by using their power.
Khan has been in jail since August last year. Before the February 8 elections, he got a 31-year sentence in three different cases. Overall, he’s facing over 200 cases. Khan says these legal cases are a plan to push him out before the elections in Pakistan.
